What’s the cheapest North American meal?

After reading that the toast sandwich is officially the UK’s cheapest meal, it made me wonder, what is the cheapest meal available in North America? Although to qualify, unlike the UK winner, please make sure your suggestion has both protein and nutrients, as well as the cost of the meal in your area. I look forward to reading your comments!

Two slices of wonderbread, with a slice of toasted wonderbread and some butter would have some protein and nutrients in (6g protein, 150 calories from the bread and some more from the butter). Bit of a joke “meal” though.

      Ramen would be much worse.

      Here’s an idea though :

1 cup of dried red lentils (40c)
      1 small onion (25c)
1 teaspoon of curry powder (30c)
      1 teaspoon of oil (5c)

Fry onion. Add lentils, water, curry powder. Cook.
$1.00 (estimated prices from Thirfty’s, and using part of a bulk buy of the curry powder, lentils, oil and onion).

You could do cheaper with out the curry powder (my estimate my be off there). But there’s a starter for people to shoot under.

        Actually, I have a follow up :

        20 grams of Raisins (11c)
100 grams of Rolled Oats (53c)
        50ml of Chocolate milk (20c)

        Make chocolate porridge – 84c.

Maybe once a year, rushing somewhere with hunger pangs, I go into a nearby MacDonalds and order a hamburger. “With Fries”? No! “Double with cheese.” No! “Just a hamburger?” “Exactly”. Think they’re not used to that. About a dollar, although I always feel queasy after. Probably the cheapest 250 calories avilable in town.

I think that oatmeal is the cheapest meal. Especially if you buy it bulk. Just add a little water(or milk). Not that tasty but really good for you.

    Random acts of pizza

Just in case you’re losing faith in humanity, there’s a subreddit to bring it all back. Random acts of pizza is for those that have fallen on hard times, as well as those that can afford to buy a stranger in need some food. You start your post with either [REQUEST] and your story, or [OFFER] and your requirements. The rest is is hopefully obvious!

My name is angela johnson I am a disabled mother of 2 and my 2 nephew and 1 niece.  It very rare that we get to eat out, because I live on a very fixed income.  I took in my niece and nephews because I could not let them go to foster care.  It would be nice to give them a treat.

Hello, I’ve lived with my Mom, who was recently diagnosed with cancer, for most of my 47 years.  I do not have money to pay for rent, food, utilities, and cat supplies of late.  My Mom pays for it all through her social security and life insurance policy.   Medicare does not pay for a home health aid so I am her caretaker.  Her surgery is at the end of August followed by a second round of chemo and radiation treatments.  She can eat ‘regular’ food until she has her surgery and she has missed pizza a great deal.  I am not just asking for a food she loves while I am her caretaker but I will donate a pizza to a person in need once I begin working again.  Thank you.

Please note, this is not the forum that offers pizza, for that you need to click on the “Random acts of pizza”  link (in blue) above.
